Permcath Insertion

Permcath Insertion------23

What is a Permcath?
A Permcath is a type of tunneled central venous catheter specifically designed for patients who require long-term hemodialysis. It is inserted into a large central vein—usually the internal jugular vein—and tunneled under the skin to reduce the risk of infection. Unlike temporary catheters, Permcaths are made from biocompatible materials that allow them to remain in place for extended periods, offering a more durable and comfortable option for patients awaiting permanent vascular access (such as an AV fistula) or those unsuitable for surgery.

The Insertion Procedure
Permcath insertion is typically performed in a sterile hospital setting under local anesthesia and ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. The catheter is tunneled subcutaneously to minimize infection risk and then connected to the vein with its tip positioned near the heart. This setup enables high blood flow rates required for effective hemodialysis. The procedure is safe and well-tolerated, and patients can usually start dialysis soon after insertion. Dr. Tanurekha Hazarika ensures meticulous technique during insertion, combined with strict aseptic protocols, to maximize catheter function and longevity.

Post-Insertion Care and Benefits
After insertion, patients are educated on catheter care, hygiene practices, and signs of infection or malfunction. Regular monitoring is essential to maintain flow efficiency and reduce complications like clotting or catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Permcaths offer several advantages, including immediate usability, reduced pain compared to frequent needle sticks, and preservation of arm veins. Under the expert supervision of Dr. Hazarika, patients receive comprehensive follow-up, ensuring that the Permcath remains a safe and effective lifeline for long-term dialysis.
